Who IS DIGITALHELLSCAPE?
Digitalhellscape is the multi-media project of photographer and proud Miami lifer Amanda Gesto. Born in 1995 and raised with a quintessential Cuban American upbringing in Flagami, her work is suffused with the tensions and contradictions that animate Miami as well as her own life. The beauty and the decay; the transcendent and the earthbound; the natural, God-given wonders of South Florida and the rampant overdevelopment that simultaneously propels life forward by force and sets it back for those who call the region home.
Coming of age in a paradoxical place and refined through years spent navigating the murky ambiguities of Miami’s nightlife and underground music scenes, Gesto’s photography captures these juxtapositions in their totality, distilling them into single, enduring images. Whether shooting the Everglades in all its lushness or after-hours rooms gripped in collective ecstatic release, Gesto uses her lens to interrogate not only how dens of hedonism can be sites of the sublime, but the ways natural edens can host the most depraved of acts. Digitalhellscape is a means of communion between Gesto, her subjects, and her onlookers, grappling with her innermost fascinations — creativity, addiction & sobriety, mental illness, and spirituality among them — by turning her focus outward.
